UK-based singer-songwriter Chris Lewington is back with his emotive new ballad 'Shadow Play'. Leaning into a sixties nostalgia, all wrapped up with his distinctive, contemporary charm, the single looks to move audiences emotionally with its delicate thematics.
Beginning with a soft piano melody that invites introspection, 'Shadow Play' is a delicate anthem that is brimming with charm and masterful songsmanship. The record's minimalist arrangement allows Lewington's powerful vocals to take center stage, immersing listeners in a world filled with nostalgia. Coupling soft strings with its enchanting piano gives the single an ethereal edge, leaning into the single's relationship with life and death.
Speaking about his influences, Chris explains, "The lyrics came about from reading about the testimony of some of the last ‘Hibakusha’ - survivors of the two atomic bombs over Japan at the end of WW11. They were all children at the time when the bombs were dropped, and the words they use to describe the event have a childlike curiosity and a very visual poetic language which is at odds with the actual horrors they describe. Their words seemed both beautiful and horrific at the same time. The middle eight is a snapshot of life the day before the bomb. The verses are a mix of their descriptions and my interpretations."
